Developments Background
On
Saturday, February 5th, 2005, Togo's long time
ruler, died. President Gnassingbe Eyadema's regim
was widely regarded as the oldest military regim
of the african continent.
Shortly
after his passing, the Togolese military appointed
and installed President Eyadema's son, Mr. Faure
Gnassingbe, as President. The International community
denounced the move and immediately began discussing
sanctions.
After the new President step down, the parliament
speaker called for national elections to choose
a new president.
Violences
which followed the elections almost plunge the
tiny West African nation into civil war.
Thus
far, togolese political actors have initiated
a slow reconciliation process which should lead
to a more stable situation in the country and
help improve living conditions for it people.
Ablode
aims to raise awareness for the situation in Togo,
particularly in the United States, by organizing
Togolese nationals and other interested parties
in an effort to create discussion, promote awareness
and pressure our elected representatives here
to take a firm stand and help bring democracy
in Togo.
