A Chance for Peace

The change of regime which intervened after the abrupt death of president Eyadema and the violence that follow have left many Togolese inside and outside the country anxious about the future of their nation. But a non-partisan analysis of reality on the political situation in Togo reveals the need for the establishment of an honest and sincere dialogue between the political actors of the country.

The government in general has shown signs of openness which has led to meetings between Mr. Faure Gnassimgbe, President of the Republic, and Mr. Gilchrist Olympio, leader of the Union of Forces for Change (U.F.C). Last January 13, 2006, the government organized religious ceremonies in the memory of the late Sylvanus Olympio--father of independence. Ablode, Inc. believes that these acts of goodwill on behalf of the government deserve consideration.

To that end, we are sending a pressing and urgent call to all political parties and associations urging them to engage a direct dialogue with the government in place. Rurthermore, we encourage the government of President Faure to continue to work toward the goal of reconciliation. Finally, we invite the togolese Diaspora in the USA to show its support for initiatives which promote dialogue and reconciliation between Togolese nationals so that we may give peace a chance and together work for the well being of the people of Togo.

Recent Developments Background

On Saturday, February 5th, 2005, Togo's long time ruler, died. President Gnassingbe Eyadema's regim was widely regarded as the oldest military regim of the african continent.

Shortly after his passing, the Togolese military appointed and installed President Eyadema's son, Mr. Faure Gnassingbe, as President. The International community denounced the move and immediately began discussing sanctions. After the new President step down, the parliament speaker called for national elections to choose a new president.

Violences which followed the elections almost plunge the tiny West African nation into civil war.

Thus far, togolese political actors have initiated a slow reconciliation process which should lead to a more stable situation in the country and help improve living conditions for it people.

Ablode aims to raise awareness for the situation in Togo, particularly in the United States, by organizing Togolese nationals and other interested parties in an effort to create discussion, promote awareness and pressure our elected representatives here to take a firm stand and help bring democracy in Togo.
