(AFP 13/05/2003)

Lome, May 13 (AFP) - 18h13 - The first vice-president of the Union of the forces of the change (UFC, the main thing started from opposition), Emmanuel Akitani Bob, candidate invested by the Party of the forces of change (PFC) to the presidential election of 1 next June, announced Tuesday to have obtained the support of his party.

"The UFC decided to support my candidature for the presidential election of June 1. It is a decision taken at the end of a meeting ", declared with the AFP Emmanuel Akitani Bob, without more precise details.

Questioned by the AFP, the secretary-general of the UFC, Jean-Pierre Fabre, did not want to provide more details. "Be attentive, a decision will be made public at the latest Wednesday", it simply declared.

On the whole, seven candidates, of which that of the Gathering of the people togolais (RPT, with the capacity) Gnassingbé Eyadéma, the outgoing president, were selected by the constitutional Court.

Gilchrist Olympio, leader of the UFC and historical opponent to president Eyadéma, will not take part in this poll, the independent national electoral Commission (CENI) having decided, at the following day of the end of deposit of the candidatures, not to retain its file, having considered to be "incomplete".

Last Tuesday, the constitutional Court rejected the request formulated by Mr. Olympio.

Mr. Eyadéma, with the capacity for 36 years, had announced in July 2001 his intention to withdraw race with presidential of 2003, in accordance with the old constitution formulates.

But on December 30, 2002, the Parliament carried out a modification of the Constitution which makes it possible this last to arise for a new mandate.
