Release
of a journalist in Togo after four months of detention

ABIDJAN,
May 13 (AFP) - 18h55 - the organization of defense of
the freedom of the press, Reporters without borders (RSF),
announced Tuesday that a journalist, Sylvestre Djahlin
Nicoui, had been released after four months of
detention, according to an official statement arrived at
the AFP in Abidjan.
"Directing from publication of the weekly magazine
the Mail of the Citizen" this journalist "was
released on May 7 after four months of detention to the
civil prison of Lome, without to be judged",
specifies RSF indicating that "no official
information was given concerning this decision".
According to RSF, Mr. Nicoui had been stopped and placed
in police custody on December 26, 2002 "for
incentive of the citizens to arm itself against the
authority with the State", following the drafting
of an article.
"The very same day the Mail of the Citizen had
published a leading article entitled +Empjcher Eyadima
of gouverner+. The weekly magazine launched +un blow of
mouth in order to render comprehensible with these which
tyrannize our people which the sling will be thunder in
2003 if nothing is done to open the valves of freedoms
and to start an honest projection, clear and palpable
towards the alternance+ ", RSF specifies.
Evoking the presidential election which must be held on
1 next June, the leading article added, always according
to RSF, which "all must be considered so that this
cycle disgusting and painful for our populations does
not continue after June 2003. Even if it is necessary to
go until the supreme sacrifice, with the supreme damage
".
On the whole seven candidates whose that of the
Gathering of the People Togolais (RPT, with the
capacity), president Gnassingbi Eyadima, were retained
by the constitutional Court.
The principal opponent, Gilchrist Olympio, leader of the
Union of the Forces of the Change (UFC, the main thing
started from opposition), were isolated poll.
Mr. Eyadema with the capacity for 36 years, had
announced in July 2001, his intention to withdraw race
with presidential of 2003, in accordance with the old
constitution formulates.
But on December 30, 2002, the Parliament carried out a
modification to measure of the Constitution which
enables him with this last to arise for a new mandate.
